Founded in 1946, Madison Theatre Guild is the oldest active community theatre organization in Madison. Community theatre draws on the resources of the community, usually on a volunteer basis, for the casts and crews for shows, and for the administrative infrastructure needed to keep the organization going.

Community theatre is amateur theatre in the best sense. MTG prides itself on being an organization in which people of all ages and of all experience levels can receive additional training in theatre arts through experience that resembles apprenticeships or mentorships, as in the medieval guilds.
